Privacy Policy

Weatherling is designed to be private by default. Everything the app does happens locally on your Mac, except the optional weather lookup described below.

The Mac app

Weatherling does not collect any personal data. There is no account, no sign-in, and no backend service. The app makes no network requests unless you turn on Sync with Your Weather.

To draw rain around your windows, the app reads the public on-screen window list that macOS provides to every sandboxed app: window position, size, layering, and the owning app’s process ID. It never reads window titles or window contents, and it never captures your screen. It does not ask for Screen Recording, Accessibility, Input Monitoring, Automation, or any other protected permission.

Your settings (rain intensity, wind, display choices, per-app pause rules, and the like) are stored in the app’s sandboxed container on your Mac and never leave your device.

Sync with Your Weather (new in 1.6)

Sync with Your Weather is off until you turn it on. While it is on and the effects are running, Weatherling asks Apple Weather for the current conditions at the place you chose, about every half hour. The request carries that place’s coordinates and goes to Apple’s WeatherKit service, never to a server of mine. Apple states that WeatherKit uses location only to provide weather forecasts, does not associate it with personally identifying information, and never shares or sells it.

You choose the place. Type a city or ZIP code and Apple Maps suggests matches, or let Weatherling use your Mac’s approximate location. macOS asks for your permission first, and only if you pick that option. You can turn it off at any time in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services.

The place you chose and the last conditions are saved in the app’s sandboxed container on your Mac, so reopening the app does not need a new lookup. Turning syncing off stops the lookups.

Ling scores and sharing (available in v1.3)

Weatherling 1.6 is now available on the Mac App Store.

Your Ling™ collection and score are stored locally in the app’s sandboxed container. A secret in your Mac’s Keychain helps protect the saved score against tampering. Weatherling does not upload your collection or run an online leaderboard.

Share My Score creates an image and score text on your Mac. You choose whether to copy them to the clipboard, save an image, or send them through another app or website. Social shortcuts open your browser; nothing is posted automatically. Any destination you choose handles what you share under its own privacy policy.

This website

This website may use Google Analytics to understand aggregate visit counts. It does not identify individual visitors and it is not used for advertising.

If you visit from the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, analytics does not load until you choose Allow all in the cookie notice. If you visit from California, analytics may load first and you can opt out with Reject unnecessary, which stops the script and clears its cookies. Elsewhere, analytics loads without a prompt.

Your choice is remembered in this browser’s local storage, not in a cookie of its own. Clearing site data forgets the choice. The site has no sign-in and sets no other cookies.

When you request a download link, we send your address to Resend to deliver that email only. We do not add you to a mailing list. Google reCAPTCHA Enterprise and Firebase App Check help prevent abuse. We store keyed hashes of your address and network address with request counts for up to 48 hours, then queue them for automatic deletion. Delivery providers may retain email delivery records under their own policies.
